G as in Goodness

Goodness is often translated into a law-abiding, kind and caring person, and the opposite being "evil" that stands for criminal, malicious and greedy.

But is mankind  really striving to achieve moral perfection - to do good?
What is it what we are trying to achieve, and how do we know we have done good?

Most people take goodness for granted. In my opinion it has basically nothing to do with religion. Goodness should not be talked about, it should be done. If we were to realize the importance of goodness no gods were needed. It was confined in the simplicity of "being human".
Henning Mankell said even clearer:
That goodness is what is the basic meaning of what is called humanity. "
